Welcome aboard to follow the travelling blog of Hotel Kalevala!

Let’s begin with the basics: how do you even get in here? Kuhmo is located on the eastern border of Finland, around 600 kilometers away from the capital city Helsinki. The trip here requires a bit of effort, but it is obviously worth all the hassle!

The nearest airport is located in Kajaani, and from there it is about 100 kilometers to Kuhmo. There are no scheduled drives, but you can reserve a taxi from us. The cost is 120 euros per person. Slightly further away are the airports of Kuopio and Oulu, where you can fly directly for example from Germany especially during the wintertime.

You can rent a car from the Kajaani airport, which are offered by Avis, Herz Finland, Budget and Europcar Kajaani. If you’re not used to driving in wintery conditions, we do not recommend renting a car in the winter, as it can be bit dangerous without any experience of driving in the wintertime!

If you prefer overland travel, you can also come here by train. The nearest train station is also located in Kajaani and almost almost every train has a connecting bus to Kuhmo around the same time the train arrives at Kajaani. The train service is offered by VR, a Finnish train company. The prices of the train tickets are very affordable, only if they are bought early enough. You can easily buy the ticket online from the website of VR. Because the pricing is dynamic, the prices of the tickets can sometimes rise very high. The bus ride from Kajaani to Kuhmo costs a bit under 20 euros. Check the bus timetables here: matkahuolto.fi.

Hotel Kalevala is located around 3,5 kilometers away from the center of Kuhmo. You can travel between this distance for example with a taxi. The cost of a taxi is around 15 to 20 euros per one way. You can order the taxi ride from either Korpitaxi or Menevä. We will help with ordering the taxi, if needed.

You can also borrow our bicycles of the hotel freely, if they are available.

If you’re arriving at the hotel with a motorcycle, you can ask for your own parking spot for the motorcycle from the upper parking area of the hotel. We also have a drying cabinet for clothing wet by the summer rain.

If you’re arriving here with your own car, we have a free parking place right next to the hotel. We also have loading spots for electric cars.
