In Finland, August is still considered to be a summer month. The weather is still warm, but the nights start to get darker instead of the midnight sun that peaks around the midsummer.
One of the most popular activities in August in Finland is most likely to be picking berries and mushrooms. That is possible due to the so-called freedom to roam. This is especially nice in Kuhmo, as there are a lot of forests and relatively few people. And in August, there are also less bugs and the weather is a bit cooler, which sounds like a perfect combination to roam through forests.
It is also still possible to observe large carnivores in August, with enough light for about 16 hours a day. The bears have not yet retired to hibernation and it is possible to spend an evening watching bears.
In Finland, you can also experience the famous northern lights. It is a magical phenomenon, and one can see them particularly well in a place like Hotelli Kalevala, where there is less light pollution in comparison to bigger cities. Experiencing northern lights adds to the magical nature of the hotel and Kuhmo.
In the best case scenario, we will be able to enjoy the dim, but warm and atmospheric August evenings.
