Are you fascinated by the northern lights? By the end of this workshop, you’ll know more about them than even the locals! This immersive experience will teach you how to forecast and photograph the auroras.
We start with a 2-hour indoor lesson. You’ll learn about the mythology surrounding the auroras and delve into the science behind them, including solar activity, space phenomena, and Earth’s magnetic field.
Next, we’ll explore how to choose the best photography locations using free online tools and how to properly set up your camera for capturing the auroras.
Finally, we’ll head outside to put your new skills into practice. If we’re fortunate, we’ll witness the auroras in all their glory. If not, we’ll capture the beauty of the starry sky or create light paintings.

Pack your gear and embark on a thrilling aurora hunting adventure with a pro aurora hunter!
Using advanced weather and aurora forecasting tools, your guide will take you to the best locations for viewing the northern lights. Depending on the conditions, we may visit 2-3 different observation points in northern Kuhmo, and if necessary, venture into neighboring areas to increase our chances of seeing the auroras.
If time allows, we’ll enjoy a snack by a cozy campfire, while the guide shares fascinating facts and stories about the auroras. You’ll also have the chance to capture unforgettable moments, as the guide can either take photos of you with the auroras or assist you in setting up your own camera.

Aurora Photography Picnic: A Magical Evening Under the Northern Lights
Join a local professional Aurora Hunter for an enchanting Aurora Picnic, where you’ll walk only 1 kilometer across a frozen lake to Harakkasaari Island to be away from light pollution. Here, we’ll set up a cozy spot by the fire to grill delicious snacks and hope for the northern lights to appear.
As you enjoy your picnic, your guide will share captivating stories and intriguing facts about the auroras and also about the surrounding nature and local life. Our experienced night photography guide can take stunning photos of you with the auroras. If the sky stays cloudy, we’ll create magical lantern portraits instead. You’ll receive the photos by email afterward! Bring your own camera, and our guide will teach you how to capture the beauty of the night.
As you enjoy your picnic, your guide will share captivating stories and intriguing facts about the auroras. On clear nights, the sky transforms into a breathtaking canvas of stars, with a chance to see the Milky Way if the moon isn’t too bright.
With a perfect vantage point towards the northern sky, Harakkasaari Island offers an excellent view for witnessing the auroras, making this a truly memorable experience if the lights decide to grace us with their presence.
